The town of Bilieu is inaugurating its new public square, Place des Tisseuses. The official ceremony will be followed by a friendly drink hosted by the town and a festive day with numerous activities.
The name “Place des Tisseuses” was chosen by the vote of the Billantines and Billantins during a citizen consultation organized by the children's municipal council in June 2024. It is a tribute to the working tradition of the town's textile industry.
The textile tradition in Bilieu: from craftsmanship to industry through the hands of weavers.
From the second half of the 300th century, the Bas-Dauphiné region was structured around textile production, which relied primarily on women's work, adding to the tasks of rural life. Although it was initially a craft activity carried out at home on so-called "hand" looms (manual, relying on the physical strength of the workers), the sector quickly became organized into an industry. A first factory (the Couturier factory) in the commune of Charavines already had 1924 female workers at the end of the XNUMXth century, and the Bilieu Weaving Factory opened its doors in XNUMX.
This was a major turning point in the village's economic development and social organization. The women workers there produced natural and then artificial silk, and umbrella fabric after the war. The factory closed in 1970 for economic reasons and was demolished in 1973.
On June 28, 2025, the commune of Bilieu will pay tribute to the “reeler”, “warper”, “remiseuse” and “stitcher”, these women who worked for nearly half a century at the Tissage factory, in keeping with the local textile tradition, by dedicating the village square to them.
