Antoine Sublet (1821-1897), painter in the service of the Carthusians
La Correrie de la Grande Chartreuse, a French museum, presents the first monographic exhibition dedicated to the artist.
After a career in Italy and France, Antoine Sublet served the Carthusian Order during the last twenty years of his life, deploying his talent within the monasteries.
The exhibition aims to show the pictorial production of the artist at that time: canvases from different Carthusians across Europe and completely new since they never had other spectators than the Carthusians.
Through a neat and immersive scenography, produced in partnership with high schools in the region, the visitor will be able to realize how the Carthusians rub shoulders with these paintings in their monasteries.
The exhibition unfolds in 4 axes:
Antoine Sublet: presentation of the painter and his artistic career
The general chapter hall: in the heart of the monastery of La Grande
Chartreuse, this room is punctuated by the portraits of the Reverend Fathers made by Sublet
The Virgin of Notre-Dame des Prés: this painting made for the Charterhouse of Neuville has become the emblem of the Carthusian printing press
The church of the Grande Chartreuse: Sublet painted several altarpieces including a Rapture of Saint Bruno.
