Église SS. Pierre et Paul

This charming village church with a Latin cross plan, probably rebuilt in the 19th century on the site of an older church, holds some surprises in its layout (bell tower in line with the choir, dome under the crossing).

The name "Macciano" is attested as early as the 8th century, but the parish is not mentioned by name until the 14th century. During the Wars of Religion, the Baron des Adrets ordered one of his captains (Champe) to ransom the church of Massieu (the written order is kept at the Château de Longpra in Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine). During the French Revolution, the church is even said to have been used as a saltpeter works (Isère Departmental Archives). According to the parish survey of 1893, the bell tower and sacristy were built starting in 1839, and the church was reportedly enlarged (no further details are given) in 1828 and 1863. Massieu became a parish again in 1860.
