Du côté des Mille Martyrs

History, culture and heritage

Starting from Merlas on the Plateau des Mille Martyrs, a round trip of approximately 800 meters allows you to reach the Pierre à Matta.
In the local dialect, "matta" means "to kill". This mysterious sacrificial stone, whose shape evokes a dolmen, has long fueled local legends.

Sustainable tourism

Mother Nature thanks you for leaving with your waste, she digests it badly! Respect cultures and private properties by staying on marked trails.

Starting from the charming village of Merlas, climb towards the refreshing Carabotin forest. The path then opens onto vast meadows overlooking Miribel-les-Échelles and offering a remarkable panorama over a large part of the Chartreuse massif.

Perched at an altitude of over 800 meters, the route continues through the forest, north of the mysterious Col des Mille Martyrs. This place steeped in history was once a pilgrimage site, in memory of the legendary martyrdom of ten thousand Christian soldiers executed in the year 140 on Mount Ararat, in ancient Persia.
