Le sacré coeur
You might even come across a tree that's been "struck by a rainbow"... Enjoy a superb panoramic view of the village from the Crête de la Sauge. A well-deserved reward after the climb!
If you see a tree that has lost its leaves for no apparent reason—its leaves are dry on one side while the rest of the tree is still green—it has been struck by a rainbow, according to the people of Valdain.
Starting from St Bueil, after the long climb through the forest along the Chemin des Mulets to reach the Crête de la Sauge crossroads, you will enjoy a magnificent view of the village. A beautiful reward after the effort!
Upon reaching the level of the sage ridge, you switch to the hilly plateau of Velanne, whose name is said to come from the Latin “nux abellana” meaning hazelnut.
Next, head to the Sacré-Cœur. It's well worth the detour, with its tower barely emerging above the fir trees.
