The museum, created in 1989, is located in an old house in the Saint-Bruno district. It presents the studio fund of the painter Lucien Mainssieux and the collection of works he built up throughout his life, mainly paintings from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries.

Lucien Mainssieux was born in 1885 in Voiron and began a career as a painter in Paris in 1905, after an artistic training with the painters François-Joseph Girot and Jules Flandrin. There he frequented the circles of avant-garde artists (Pablo Picasso, Max Weber, Stravinsky, etc.) where long friendships began (André Dunoyer de Segonzac, Jacqueline Marval, etc.). Lucien Mainssieux's art feeds on all nascent artistic movements, however, without ever really fully adhering to them. He will remain all his life an independent and complete artist, musician and assiduous writer.

A great traveler, he travels everywhere in France, Italy and especially in North Africa, significantly influencing his way of painting. However, he retains a very special attachment to Dauphiné and Voiron, his hometown, where he returns to stay regularly.

When he passed away in 1958, Lucien Mainssieux instituted the city of Voiron as sole legatee of his studio and collection. Thus, the museum keeps more than 1 paintings, 000 drawings, illustrated books, personal objects and all of the painter's archives and personal documents.

This permanent exhibition was not conceived as an end in itself, but as a starting point. A slow rotation of works will regularly allow you to take a fresh look at a collection and a multi-faceted artist, thanks to works in reserve or on loan from other museums.
